When I think of Malibu, I think of epic views and beautiful beaches. That’s exactly what Blessan had in mind when planning his Point Dume proposal to Shannon. Point Dume is her favorite spot in Malibu, so it was easy to “swing by” after their lunch plans. What we didn’t plan for was a heavy amount of fog! My entire drive up the coast was foggy, but I had my fingers crossed that Malibu would bring the sunshine. When I got to the lookout, the visibility was practically 0ft. After checking out some of our plan B and C options, Blessan said he wanted to go for it. The view at the lookout is gorgeous, so it was worth the risk. Right before their arrival, the clouds parted to reveal the beach below, as if it were the plan all along! The weather only got better from there.
It was a little tricky to plan their outfits for the proposal without sending off alarm bells. Blessan knew Shannon would want to be in heels for this moment but wasn’t sure how to convince her to change in and out of them for the walk up the trail. He came up with the perfect plan: He brought a tripod along on the trip and used it to take photos of them at various places. By the time of the proposal day, it seemed natural that she would change back into her heels for the photo. While Shannon finished putting them back on, Blessan “set up the tripod.” And by that, I mean he grabbed the ring from inside the tripod box. It was a genius plan if you ask me!
Point Dume Proposal Locations
This lookout is easy to access from the beach, but you need to know where you’re going to get to it. It’s not marked on the map, and you have to cut over from a different lookout. The trail is mostly sand with some minimal inclines, so you don’t have to work up a sweat to get there. The walk takes about 10 minutes from the parking lot. There are incredible beach views on each side of the bluff.
Point Dume Beach is also a great spot for a proposal or engagement photos after the big moment. From there, you can see the massive cliff, and there’s so much room on the beach to have fun taking photos!
